Hakodate: Billions Of Dollars In Views

Hakodate

The former Republic of Ezo (aka Hokkaido) capital Hakodate is a must visit for any die-hard Shinsengumi fan. Many other beautiful sights await of course, but let's get our priorities straight. Donburi Yokocho Seafood restaurant avenue (hakodate morning market)

Similarly to Sapporo, the day in Hakodate starts with a hearty ๐˜ฌ๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ (raw fish topped rice bowl) at the morning market. The shops are clustered together so it`s easy to window shop the typically Japanese plastic food displays before making your choice. On the other hand, the bare and generic location does take away from the atmosphere, especially after having squeezed through the ware-laden alleys of Sapporo`s ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ช. A helpful pamphlet will guide you through the various restaurants, most of which offer more affordable "mini" versions of the ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฃ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ช perfect for a quick breakfast fix. โญโญโญโ˜…โ˜…

Of course, there was no way I would settle for a mini sized ๐˜ฌ๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ for breakfast. Raw squid and grilled salmon fat may feel hard to stomach in the morning, but the Service Set at this shop is delicious, and true value for money. โญโญโญโญโญ

The ๐— ๐—ผ๐˜๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ถ ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐˜ is one of the most iconic locations in Hakodate, with its red-brick warehouses facing the bay. A stone's throw away from the station and the ๐˜ˆ๐˜ด๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ช (morning market), it seemed the perfect location to put up. Come night, and I discovered its great flaw. Once the sun sets, Motomachi turns into a ghost town. While it was fun being able to stand in the middle of the road taking photos of "Japan's most beautiful slope" ๐—›๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—ญ๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ฎ, hunting for dinner became a serious problem and eventually boiled down to Lucky Pierrot (the Chinese take on McDonald's), convenience store food or supermarket fare. ๐Ÿจ My hostel, ๐— ๐—ผ๐˜๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ถ ๐—–๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ฎ ๐—›๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ฒ, was the best accommodation I stayed in during my trip to Japan, so I have no regrets about having to take the ๐˜ด๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ (city tram) more than I expected. They have a second house near the Goryokaku fort, but I loved relaxing in the evening in the common space, chatting over a cup of coffee with the two lovely korean hosts An and Chan (hope I spelled their names right ๐Ÿ™ˆ!). โญโญโญโญโ˜…

โญโญโญโญโ˜… Admission: 300ยฅ (you can get a discounted ticket when visiting 2 to 4 of the associated museums). Student discount available. Required time: 30-45 min A windy, rainy day was perfect for a morning museum crawl (if there is no such thing, we should invent it right now). The Ainu museum was relatively small, but with the combined ticket topped with a student discount, it was also ridiculously cheap (compared to similar institutions in Japan). It offers a good introduction to understanding who were the Ainu people and how they lived (and live today). A much bigger Ainu museum will be opening in the spring of 2020, and will probably (?) take the place of this space. I loved the funny comments left here and there by the Director. The board with instructions to make paper patterns was a nice plus.

Required time: 30min Apart from the beautiful rose garden surrounding the building (free to visit) and some selfie-ops in the rather generically furnished upstair rooms, there really is nothing much here. It was pouring outside, so it was a fun way to spend an hour trying to get a fancy photo of myself sipping tea in the consule's living room. In case you were wondering, I did not succeed. A victorian tearoom and a shop selling British products are set up on the 1st floor. While Japanese people love it, I'm not sure how much appeal it has to foreigners. Personally, while in Japan, I rather have some matcha in a temple.
