Art for the Seoul

Seoul

Seoul has changed greatly since I last sunk my roots in the city. My work has brought me away from home, but I still come back about twice a year. I try to visit new places each time I visit; and, being a creative, I usually find myself in the city’s creative spots. Here’s a list of some of my favorite shops, cinemas, and book havens in Seoul!

D&Department Seoul by Millimeter Milligram - Itaewon

Seoul, South Korea • Recommendation • 7 months ago

D&Department Seoul by MMMG has several floors dedicated to design goods. It exudes a hipster energy that attracts locals with an eye for the aesthetically pleasing. I find the first floor very interesting. It holds affordable well-designed products from Korea or Japan. I stop here every time I come back to Seoul; and I never leave without buying something!

Daelim Changgo Gallery COLUMN

대림창고

Seoul, South Korea • Recommendation • 7 months ago

Daelim Changgo Gallery CO:LUMN always invites controversial artists—ones that challenge the norms of the art world. They often introduce new talents to the scene, so there’s something fresh every time you visit. Plus, most of the exhibitions held here are multi-sensory and interactive!

Indie Space

Seoul, South Korea • Recommendation • 7 months ago

Now located in the first floor of Seoul Cinema, Indie Space is the first independent movie theater in Seoul. It’s the place to be when you’re looking to widen your cinematic perspective. They are an important player the city’s movie scene, heavily supporting events like the Seoul Independent Film Festival. Catch a show or two, but check the program beforehand to see if the screenings offer subtitles in your language!

Jeongdok Public Library

서울특별시교육청 정독도서관

Seoul, South Korea • Recommendation • 7 months ago

Over half a million books are housed in Jeongdok Public Library. It’s easy to get lost in this bibliophile heaven—and that’s exactly why I love it. Many locals come here to escape from their day-to-day into the pages of a tome. When you’re ready to face the world again, grab a meal at one of the old restaurants in the vicinity!

Kyobo Bookstore (Gwanghwamun)

교보문고 광화문점

Seoul, South Korea • Recommendation • 7 months ago

Korea’s largest bookstore chain, Kyobo Bookstore has multiple branches around the city. The Gwanghwamun outlet is the largest, which means I am able to sit down and read without being bothered. Pick from their wide selection of volumes (which includes plenty of comic books), then look for a quiet corner to call your own. Explore the space when you can; they also have a stationery shop and small cafe!
