Kafe Betawi, whose name literally translates to “native Jakarta,” serves Indonesian street food in a casual restaurant setting. Come for the nasi goreng and mie goreng (Indonesian stir-fried noodles), soto betawi (beef soup with coconut milk), kue rangi (grilled cake made of tapioca flour), es campur (mixed ice with fruits), and sekotong (ginger-infused warm soup). It’s definitely my go-to for my favorite Indonesian comfort eats!
Sate Khas Senayan always satisfies my satay (skewered meat) fix! The Indonesian restaurant dishes out several variations of the local delicacy, including chicken, beef, and lamb. Each order comes with 10 sticks, perfect for sharing! I also recommend the Gado Gado (vegetables with peanut sauce and crackers) to start.
A long queue by the roadside points to the popular street stall of Hock Seng Rojak on Gat Lebuh Cecil. Brave the wait and spear a mouthful of Rojak (fruit and vegetable salad)! Savor a medley of flavors and textures: sweet gooey dressing, crisp fresh fruits, and crunchy toppings! These vendors are also known to concoct an ultra thick prawn paste. They chop up fruit and cucumber right on the spot; then, sprinkle peanuts, dried shrimp, and dried cuttlefish powder for extra relish.
