I am a bit obsessed with metros (I design metro maps) and some underground stations are works of art in their own right! From the New York subway to the London Underground and Stockholm Metro, here are some of my favourite stations!
Almost all of Stockholm's stations are works of art, I particularly like the white and blue fern patterns at Stockholm's main station.

Located in the Bronx, the Italianate Palazzo design of the E 180 St station on the 2 and 5 lines was opened in 1912 and is perhaps the grandest in the city.

The walls of this Paris Metro station are covered with what looks like a giant wordsearch or game of Scrabble. In fact the tiles spell out the text if the Declaration of the Rights of Man.

Bangkok's MRT stations are generally functional and clean but boring copies of each other. However, several new stations opened in 2019 have much more interesting architecture inspired by the local area. MRT Sanam Chai is close to Bangkok's Chinatown and its red wooden roof is inspired by temple architecture.

Moscow's Metro is reknowned for its architecture, and one of the most beautiful stations on the network is at Komsomolskaya. The chandeliers and painted yellow roof make you think you're in a museum or a cathedral.

A metro station in the city of Kaohsiung, Taiwan might seem an unlikely location for the largest glass artwork in the world, but this is where you can find Dome Of Light, designed by Italian artist Narcissus Quagliata. The artworks filters in beautiful light through the station roof.

Themed around water and light, this Naples metro station looks like a million fireflies landed!

Tashkent’s metro shows off the combination of Soviet and Islamic architecture. The blue arched domes at Alisher Navoi station are a case in point, named after and inspired by the national poet of Uzbekistan.
