Romney Marsh

New Romney

Romney Marsh is a very unusual area in Kent. It is not conventionally pretty but it has its own bleak charm. The beginning of Dickens Great Expectations is set here. Remember the scary graveyard scene. It has a fantastic coastline and some incredible historic churches. It also has some interesting public arts works, of which more later. Romney Marsh‘s most famous export is its sheep.

Romney Marsh Historic Churches

1 save

New Romney, United Kingdom • Recommendation •

The mediaeval churches of Romney Marsh were built by the lords of the manor on the Marsh to serve the communities. Although the population of the area was never high, the churches were often on a large scale to reflect the importance of the parish or the importance of the patron. Nearly all of the churches were in existence by 1100, likely as wooden buildings being built later in stone. It is possible to visit all of them by car, by bicycle or on foot. Routes available online. We took two days. Most are open, some you have to follow instructions to obtain the key and one or two you will not get inside. But you will slow your pace and get a feel for a lost and different world of medieval England

Dungeness is an acquired taste! Miles of shingle. A nuclear power station. Fishermen’s huts. Swirling sea birds. Old and new lighthouses. End of the line for the light railway. Derek Jarman’s old hideaway. Windswept and desolate or atmospheric and spiritual. You decide.
