English wine has improved exponentially and is now highly regarded. Visit the Hush Heath Winery and try it. Along with Jakes cider made from their own apples and tasty charcuterie platters. Lovely walks round the estate and three free wine samples in the lovely tasting rooms and terrace overlooking the vineyard.

The Royal Military Canal was constructed to help fight off a Napoleonic Invasion but is now a place where you can have a peaceful and scenic walk or hire a boat and go for a row. The canal is easily accessible in Hythe, an attractive town with a good beach. Every two years since 1898, the town has hosted the Hythe Venetian fete with a floating procession. The pictures show August 2019

National Trust owned. World famous garden which belonged to author Vita Sackville West. ( Bloomsbury). Garden design was innovative, but is now considered archetypally English. The castle is not really a castle but is none the less a very attractive building The cafe serves good food from the estate and you can always rely on the National Trust for a decent cup of tea

Moving Battle of Britain memorial to the men of the RAF who lost their lives in the Battle of Britain, in1940. The memorial is in a stunning location, overlooking the Straits of Dover where so much action took place. Free to access. Good visitor centre with optional exhibition (£5 ), helpful if you dont really know how important this 6 month ‘Battle’ was. Small cafe and viewing platform. Lovely cliff top walks near at hand. Visit the Cliff Top cafe half a mile away.

Every year I go to the excellent Cheltenham Literature festival in October. This year I will make a Lemi list. There are four festivals a year in Cheltenham, literature, jazz, music ( classical) and science. I must try one or two of the others too. Perhaps NOT the jazz. Chacon a son goût
Romney Marsh is a very unusual area in Kent. It is not conventionally pretty but it has its own bleak charm. The beginning of Dickens Great Expectations is set here. Remember the scary graveyard scene. It has a fantastic coastline and some incredible historic churches. It also has some interesting public arts works, of which more later. Romney Marsh‘s most famous export is its sheep.
