Cheltenham for the festivals

Cheltenham, Gloucester

Every year I go to the excellent Cheltenham Literature festival in October. This year I will make a Lemi list. There are four festivals a year in Cheltenham, literature, jazz, music ( classical) and science. I must try one or two of the others too. Perhaps NOT the jazz. Chacon a son goût

Hotel ibis Gloucester

Gloucester, United Kingdom • Recommendation •

Odd advice maybe but consider staying in nearby Gloucester, when you visit Cheltenham for the festivals. Prices are inevitably inflated in Cheltenham in festival weeks and from Gloucester, you can drive or better still use the excellent bus service into Cheltenham. The Ibis is a good option.

Booked here for Cheltenham literature festival quiz with supper. Will report back! Can report back that this place was stunning! Beautiful art deco interior. We were in a semi circular private space on the balcony which looked down onto the main space. See photo. Perfect. Food very good. Would return to sample more of menu as on this occasion it was a group booking and chosen for us.

Although Zizzi is a well known chain, this is an unusual and rather splendid Zizzi in a church! Note the address and the photo. Also although this is a very large and very popular venue, we received very personal and friendly service.

Holst Birthplace Museum

Cheltenham, United Kingdom • Recommendation •

A small but interesting and intimate museum dedicated to Gustav Holst. If you get a thrill from standing next to his piano ( I do! ), go. The day after my visit, there was to be a concert on this very piano. Wish I could have heard it.

Imperial Garden Bar

Cheltenham, United Kingdom • Recommendation •

Imperial Gardens are a lovely place to relax in Cheltenham town centre. The outdoor bar there has its own walled garden ( a garden within a garden) and the friendly and knowledgeable barista served me an excellent flat white and my friend a good cup of English tea. Look out for the small memorial Henry Skillicorne, the 18th century entrepreneur, who first saw the opportunity to market Cheltenham as a ‘spa town’
