Revolver Espresso

Bali Denpasar, Indonesia • Recommendation • 12 August 2018

Tucked away in an alley in downtown Seminyak, Revolver Espresso started out as a small 30-seater joint back in 2011. Now, it has expanded into a full-blown boutique cafe, sourcing beans from all over the world and roasting them locally. Swing the saloon-style doors open to reveal its grungy and eclectic interiors, together with the fragrant, unmistakable aroma of heavenly coffee. As soon as you take a seat, pick your poison! Keep cool in the middle of a hot day with the Revolver Coffee Shake (blended espresso, milk, and ice cream), or try something out-of-the-box like the Espresso Tonic (single origin espresso, tonic water, and lemon). Pair your beverage with any of Revolver’s savory or sweet treats, and you’re bound to stay around longer than you expected!

Expat. Roasters

Bali Denpasar, Indonesia • Recommendation • 12 August 2018

Make your way to Expat. Roasters, a pleasant addition to Seminyak’s thriving coffee scene. They take pride in their “from the ground up” mindset, collaborating with local Balinese farmers and producers to create the ideal cup. Java options include the usual black, white, filtered, and cold brew; but they also have tea, matcha, and chocolate selections for non-coffee drinkers. Don’t forget to grab a slice of their freshly baked banana bread—it comes highly recommended!

Hungry Bird Coffee

Bali Denpasar, Indonesia • Recommendation • 12 August 2018

Head to Hungry Bird Coffee in Canggu for a great cuppa and brunch spread! This third-wave coffee shop is the brainchild of a self-taught and self-made connoisseur named Edo. Back in the day, he would roast beans from his bedroom using a coffee machine that he purchased online. He eventually opened his own store and is now a hit amongst local surfers. Enjoy single-origin brews together with homemade pancakes, hearty breakfast plates, and tasty baked goods. Hungry Bird also hosts cupping sessions, so call ahead to reserve a slot.

Seniman Coffee Studio

Bali Denpasar, Indonesia • Recommendation • 12 August 2018

In Bahasa Indonesia, “seniman” means “artist”—seems appropriate as Seniman Coffee Studio has completely turned coffee into an art form. Beans from various plantations around Indonesia are roasted in-house, and each cup is expertly prepared by hand. Whether you choose to have your brew hand-pulled or poured through a siphon, you’re bound to receive an excellent blend. Every serving even comes with a glass of water and a small Balinese treat, presented on a stylish wooden paddle. The studio conducts tasting workshops twice a week, where you get to learn how to make the perfect espresso, as well as the basics of latte and milk art. They also have a shop dedicated to all sorts of coffee equipment. Scour their collection, and practice your newfound skill at home!

Bali Denpasar, Indonesia • Recommendation • 12 August 2018

F.R.E.A.K. stands for French Roasted “Enak” (Indonesian for “delicious”) Arabica from Kintamani, and their name pretty much says it all! They always make it a point to use high-quality beans, which are all organically grown in the highlands of Bali. Anomali Coffee

Bali Denpasar, Indonesia • Recommendation • 12 August 2018

Anomali Coffee has branches all over Bali, but its Kuta location is the best place for some quiet time. Expect straight-up Indonesian java while you’re here, made with beans from different regions like Aceh, Papua, and Sumatra. The baristas even allow visitors to witness the actual coffee roasting process, so prepare to get up close and personal with your cup of joe!
