Elorde Boxing Gym (Sucat)

Las Pinas City, Philippines • Recommendation • 29 May 2018

Train like a true boxing champ at Elorde Sports Center! Before the Philippines had Manny Pacquiao, there was Gabriel “Flash” Elorde, the namesake of this gym. He was an accomplished boxer, who in his 20-year career took on 115 matches—87 he won, 24 by knockout. The Elorde Sports Center is part of a larger sports complex that has branched out but its heart has and always will remain in the ring. Sparse low-ceilinged floors make way to punching bags and the boxing ring. Elorde also offers Muay Thai and Spinning Classes when you want to mix things up.

Boxing doesn’t have to stay in the ring, at FlyWeight you still pack a punch—just, differently. Your main sparring partner is a 6-foot punching bag, in a room full of other heavy bags. You punch, throwing a combo of boxing techniques, then alternate with bodyweight exercises. It’s simpler said than done, FlyWeight’s regular workout is an intense hour, with 9 rounds on the punching bag. They’re even confident enough to put a number on it—750 calories. Whether you’re a Contender (beginner), Challenger (intermediate), or Champion (experienced), FlyWeight has a class for you.

Onelife Studio (Makati)

Makati City, Philippines • Recommendation • 29 May 2018

A little notch up from yoga in terms of movement, but with the same lean muscle development, Pilates is gentler, slower, and intentional than the gym buff’s typical workout. One Life Studio is a private studio, with dedicated instructors who’ll guide you at every move. You’ll have to pay a premium for the privacy and luxury of one-on-one attention, but Pilates is perfect for those healing from whatever life throws at them—pregnancy, sports injury, or age.
