Cooking Thai D.I.Y.

You know what they say, “Feed a man Thai food, and he’ll be happy for a day; teach a man to cook Thai food, and he’ll never have to endure those 2:00AM cravings again!” Indeed, there’s no better way to get your fix than to learn how to prepare your favorite Thai dishes straight from the locals! Bangkok is a culinary feast for travelers—and residents—looking for some spice in their lives! Thai cuisine balances fresh and light flavors from aromatic herbs, like coriander and basil, with the cutting spice of red chilis. This distinct palate has given the world many favorites like Pad Thai (ผัดไทย, stir-fried noodles), Tom Yum Goong (ต้มยำกุ้ง, hot and sour soup), and Green Curry. The mortar and pestle, as well as the wok and spatula, will be your best friend from now on. Book a session or two, and you’ll pleasantly find that you can make something “aroi mak mak” (very, very delicious)!

Silom Thai Cooking School

Bangkok, Thailand • Recommendation • 23 July 2018

The lessons begin and end outside of the kitchen for Silom Thai Cooking School. By far, their class is the most bang for your baht. Every session starts with a morning trip to the market where the instructor will accompany you to buy the day’s farm-fresh ingredients! The freshly shredded coconut, pungent gingers, and plump chilis purchased at the market will be the very same ones you use in the kitchen. Even with a diverse menu, from Pad Thai to Green Curry, the steps remain the same. The instructor sits with you on a traditional mat, grinding spices into a paste in a stone mortar and pestle. Once the prep work is done, the stove is ready and waiting outside. All the ingredients come together. The green curry paste and various other ingredients mingle in the pan, as instructor ladles coconut milk one at a time. One of the best parts is that their morning class ends just in time for lunch!

The Oriental Hotel Thai Cooking School is managed by the Mandarin Oriental (MO), along the Chao Phraya River. MO’s own chef Narain Kiattiyotchareon is the master at work behind the counter, imparting his expertise from a kitchen classroom setting across the river from the hotel. He begins with a demonstration, a mirror hanging overhead with a full view of the table below. Class ends with a feast of your creation at the Sala Rim Naam, looking out to the majestic river. The menu changes daily, so there’s always something new to learn!
