Girl Boss Getaway

Retreat into the rich and inviting culture of Japan through the city of Osaka! It’s a beautiful time to be alive, where we can see fellow Girl Bosses taking over the world one meeting room at a time; but every strong woman knows that the threat of burnout is strong. The city is just ripe with opportunity to let loose while still learning. In Osaka, tradition thrives side-by-side with modern culture. Ring up your closest like-minded girlfriends and take the weekend to completely immerse—you’ve earned it! Who knows, your down time could spark an idea for your next hustle. As the mother of the GirlBoss brand, Sophia Amoruso, wrote, “You create the world, blink by blink. It is entirely yours to discover and yours to create.”

A long sauna session at Spa World will completely loosen you up for what’s to come. In Japan, hot stone saunas are called Gaban’yoku (岩盤浴). SpaWorld’s Gaban’yoku section on the third floor takes you around the world through their themed sauna rooms. Luxuriate in the marble-like hall of their Turkish Hamam; breathe freely in the Israeli Salt Room; or, awaken the senses with the frigid air of their Icelandic Cold Wind sauna. Afterwards, you can slip into the warm waters of their different onsen (温泉, Japanese for “hot spring bath”) rooms on the fourth and sixth floor!

Kougaryu (Shinsaibashi)

Osaka, Japan • Recommendation • 8 months ago

Fuel up with Takoyaki from Kogaryu. Takoyaki is a popular snack in Osaka. Almost every street corner has a stall sizzling away—the rule of thumb is the longer the line, the better the snack. Head straight for Kogaryu. The stall is unassuming beside the distracting shopfronts on its street, but they’re committed to the freshest ingredients. They make their own mayonnaise and special sauce (a blend of apple and onion), while green onions are added to compliment the taste of fresh octopus and Bonito flakes.

Horie Area is a peaceful alternative to the frantic shopping streets of Osaka, like Dotonbori and Americamura. Take your time sifting through the boutiques of Kita-horie (north) and Minami-horie (south). There’s a shop to suit every distinct style. HUF for Hypebeasts; Hysteric Glamour for street divas; and Shamua for quirky creatives. Even more pragmatic dressers can hold on to Urban Research.

ビオトープ オオサカ

Osaka, Japan • Recommendation • 8 months ago

Biotop is a massive lifestyle shop that rises tall and wide on Orange Street. A plant nursery spills from the brick shophouse on the street, so step through and have a look at the goodies inside. From minimalist with an edge to a little more flow, Fumika Uchida and nowos, respectively, are two brands to keep an eye out for. Take your time through each floor where there’s more fashion, cosmetics, and general merchandise to see. End your spree on the roof deck garden with a cup of coffee, mulling over your haul with the girls.

Sink your teeth in succulent Yakiniku (焼き肉 or 焼肉, Japanese for “grilled meat”) at Ooyodoya. The slivers of meat are expertly chosen and lovingly laid on the grill. The fires caress and lick at the steaks until they’re just the right state. After a long day, steak with girls is just what the doctor ordered.

Slip on a Kimono at Maikoya Osaka to discover what femininity and strength mean to those wearing the ceremonial robe. A local will take you through a Japanese tea ceremony in a traditional home setting. Sit on the tatami (畳, Japanese for “rice straw mats”) with your legs tucked under you as a ritual of over a hundred years is graciously shared with you. The tea is as rich as the culture that made it, so savor each sip!

Cuddle up a sweet hedgehog at Small Animals Cafe Rock Star in Namba! Locking eyes with a clueless critter like a guinea pig, rabbit, or hedgehog guarantees a squee even from the hardest hearts. The wooden table has a railing for the animal’s safety—so, play, feed, and pet to your heart’s content.

Jack and Betty

Osaka, Japan • Recommendation • 8 months ago

The energy of the okama (Japanese slang for a cross-dresser or transgendered person) ladies at Jack and Betty is both infectious and inspiring. They leave it all on stage in glamorous outfits and elaborate choreography under the leadership of Mama, Junko Osagi. The show is completely in Japanese but it won’t matter much because the booze and fun times blur any barriers.
