The Trans-Mongolian is one of the world’s last great train journeys. It takes 6 days to travel from Beijing in China through Mongolia, Siberia all to way to Moscow. Sensible people break the journey along the way and visit Ulan Bator or Lake Baikal. Silly people like me do it in one go with no stops! Here’s the story of my trip.

The train departs Beijing every Wednesday. At 07:00 I board the train, a placard on the side proclaiming BEIJING - ULAN BATOR - MOSKVA. There are 2 bed compartments as well as 4 bed compartments. My compartment-mates are three Mongolians (Young Mongolian, Mum Mongolian and Aunty Mongolian). I have my Mongolian transit visa and Russian visa at the ready. the trans-Mongolian heads north towards Mongolia and into Russia, before joining with the famous Trans-Siberian line into Moscow.

Very good food and a great ambiance, but do you really go to Beijing for good Western food? With that said, if you need a break from Chinese, this is a good option

Meituan-Dianping began as a startup focused on restaurant reviews and promotions. After strategic partnerships and product developments, it has grown to be both China’s biggest on-demand food delivery portal and hotel booking site! The company’s primary aim is to become the most important technology in the daily lives of the Chinese people. By broadening its scope to include retail, cinema screenings, and beauty services (in the form of 4.7 million merchants), it’s well on its way to reach that goal.

Beijingers make trips to Bai Ji Niangao for their delicious freshly-made rendition of the glutinous rice treat! The family-owned establishment takes pride in using the best locally-sourced ingredients to make their nian gao. It’s even halal! You’ll find several variations of the dessert, such as qiegao (切糕, a large slab with alternating layers of rice and red bean paste) and “rolling donkey” (驴打滚, a log of rice wrapped around red bean paste and dusted with roast soybean flour).

Recorded vocals for my original song "Just My Type" here -- watch out for the single coming out soon! Lovely studio, with one of the best microphones I've ever used.

Burrowed underground, The Bunker is an alternative art space co-opted from a former air-raid shelter! Instead of a pristine white cube, the gallery retains a moody and mysterious atmosphere. Its founder, Peng Xiaoyang, has set up a series of spaces like The Bunker. One, in an apartment unit (DRC No. 12), and the other, the Tattoo Parlour. Shows are extremely rare and visits are always by appointment, but each trip guarantees to tickle the brain with once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Keep an eye out for what else Mr. Peng Xiaoyang has up his sleeve!
