Run by two brothers, L’Ocanda serves authentic Italian cuisine made with fine local ingredients. Try the Gnocchi Tuna with Mushroom Cream Sauce for a rich, creamy dish with perfectly cooked, pillowy gnocchi. The Spaghetti with Clams, a light pasta dish made with white wine, garlic, and clams, is also a show-stopper. Pair your meal with one of their Cream Puffs to sample a local dessert or browse their selection of handmade cakes and pastries for something sweet to take home. The restaurant also whips up whole cakes for special occasions!

For over 20 years, Graubunden has been serving omelets, breads, and pastries using fresh local ingredients. The generous quantity and quality of their products, coupled with the friendly service, makes them a top-of mind option for breakfast and brunch. The Original Graubunden is an all-time favorite–fluffy scrambled eggs, bacon, cheese and tomato in a baguette. Vegetarian options are also available.

The Barn

ザ バーン

Niseko, Japan • Recommendation • 7 months ago

The Barn combines the methods of French cooking with top notch Hokkaido produce, keeping their menu simple to highlight natural flavors. Bring your kids, the Barn Original Plate under the Kids Menu is filled with classic comfort foods—fried chicken, mini hamburg steak, pancake and dessert. For the parents, I suggest you have a bottle from the owner’s Boyer-Gontard vineyard in Burgundy.

Steak Rosso Rosso

Niseko, Japan • Recommendation •

A thick slice of steak and a glass of wine makes for a splendid dinner at Steak Rosso Rosso. Rosso, which translates to red in Italian, stands for their succulent steaks and the wide selection of wines on offer. Take your pick from Australian, Wagyu, Hokkaido and Kobe beef! The Bacon-Wrapped Scallops is a good prelude to the steak, with the scallops in just the right doneness lying on a bed of red wine sauce. The buzzing, casual atmosphere coupled with the great service adds to a relaxing night out.

Gorilla Cafe Niseko

Niseko, Japan • Recommendation •

Shop and dine under one roof at Gorilla Niseko! Behind their glass doors is a casual restaurant, a deli-cafe, and a gourmet grocer. Formerly known as the Niseko Super Market and Deli, it’s filled with meats, fresh produce, dairy products, and sake and wine. After shopping, take a seat and delight in a combo of their pulled pork sandwich and signature Gorilla Blend (crafted by local roasters, Takano Coffee). Plenty of freshly-made salads, soups, and sandwiches can also be consumed in the store or taken to-go.

The Flying Fish

ザ フライング フィッシュ

Niseko, Japan • Recommendation • 6 months ago

This parked van in Hirafu elevates the English favorite fish and chips using Hokkaido’s outstanding produce. Born out of British owner Matt Stormont’s hankering for food from his birthland, Flying Fish offers the day’s catch delivered daily from the seaside town of Yoichi. Watch as each fillet is battered in English Bass Pale Ale and rice flour. The thick chips are made from Kutchan’s superb potatoes, golden outside and velvety soft inside. In true English fashion, your order is handed in a nifty newspaper package.
