One of the largest, oldest and most visited museums in the world! This was Catherine the Great’s heaven. She filled this with around 3 million items and collections of art and paintings. Unfortunately, only a small portion of the collection is open for public display. But I’ll take what I can get! 🖼

The prestigious State Hermitage Museum is the second biggest museum in the world. It was founded in 1764 when Catherine the Great purchased a collection of paintings from a Berlin merchant named Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky. Now, it is home to more than three million works of Western European art, occupying several historic buildings within the main complex. Drop by the Western Palace to immerse yourself in prehistoric artifacts; marvel at classical antiquities in the New Hermitage; or, explore the wonders of Italian Renaissance in the Old Hermitage. Admission is free every first Thursday of the month, so plan your visit then to save a few bucks!

This is an excellent museum for a wet day in Nelson. Good exhibits, well presented and put into context. OK not as good as the Abel Tasman National Park which we would have visited if it had not been raining but fair enough it was not competing!

If you don’t mind climbing a gazillion steps* to reach it, the National Palace Museum puts the National Taiwan Museum to shame with the sheer vastness of its collection, among which are items drawing flocks of tourists every day. But fear not, the premises themselves are huge, and even when visiting on days where the visitor counter reached over 3000, the 25 exhibit rooms did not feel crowded at all. Highlights of the permanent exhibition: 🔸 Meat-shaped stone. Just as the name suggests, this is a banded jasper mineral that enticingly resembles a juicy slab of freshly braised pork belly. The contrast between the hardness of the material and the tenderness and almost gelatinous quality of its appearance will have you questioning your own eyes. 🔸 Jadeite cabbage. This delicately chiselled piece of jade is mind-blowing finery at its fullest, from the crunch of the cabbage leaves to the details of the grasshopper sitting in its middle. ❗️The National Palace Museum has 2 branches, one in Taipei and one in Taibao (Chiayi). Its most famous exhibits regularly rotate between the 2 locations, so do check on their website before visiting, to avoid disappointment! 🎫: 350元 (discounts available, free on selected special dates) 💬: Chinese and English; Free guided tours in Chinese and English; Audio players available for rent at 150元 in 14 languages * jk, the museum is fully wheelchair accessible https://www.npm.gov.tw/en/
